When I had my son in 2018, I realised that \u2013 despite the joy of the situation \u2013 my intense 24\/7 carer role had far removed my reality from that of family and friends. While everyone was happy to meet up for a chat or a brief visit, some days felt overwhelmingly long \u2013 and lonely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The support I received from my postpartum doula, who brought me warm, nourishing food, held my baby for me while I ate, showered, or even left the house for a quick walk all by myself (gasp!), was so incredibly valuable. Her care and understanding gave me the strength to keep giving the care that I needed and wanted to give to my son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And while we talk about the importance a birth and postpartum doula can have for the carer of an infant, we are less aware that those caring for loved ones who live with a life-limiting condition requiring constant care and attention, can reach similar levels of exhaustion and loneliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
